The first part of selecting an ottoman is obviously deciding where you want to use it and what kind of feeling you want it to evoke. For my purposes, velvet was the only option, as I wanted the space I was furnishing to have a relaxed and luxuriant feel.
Of course, regardless of the color, you’re going to be presented with numerous materials and styles of upholstery. Channeled upholstery has nicely stitched lines, while tufted upholstery includes buttons that provide a familiar sectioned surface.
In 1299 there was an event that occurred that would change the way the world decorated its houses and living rooms for centuries to follow. The event would be the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, which would continue to exist in some form until 1922.
As you might imagine, I learned quite a bit on my search for a new chair and ottoman combo. One of the most important things I learned is that the listings will often provide the dimensions for the ottoman or the chair, but its rare that you’ll get both. When they do include measurements, it’s almost invariably for the chair, leaving one to wonder at the actual size of the ottoman.
The primary purpose I had in mind for the ottoman was as a footstool, but many versions also come with convenient internal storage and are both large enough and sturdy enough to serve as additional seating.
The history of the ottoman stretches back hundreds of years into our past to the years after 1299 when the ottoman empire was founded. While this empire would endure in one form or another until 1922, the furniture that it inspired would continue well into modern day.
Throughout the history of this household item, it would take on many different forms, and wind up significantly changed from its initial design which would often dominate three-quarters of the walls in a room. Today ottomans are usually found in the form of footstools and, less frequently, large benches that can double as armless, backless couches.
