The most recent design of ottomans asks an important question, why settle for a couch OR a footstool when you can have both? When I was looking for a way to store multiple guest beds in my house without taking up undue space, I was shocked when I stumbled onto ottoman that could be converted into couches that were serviceable as guest beds.
While that year spelled the end of the empire itself, the furniture that it inspired would continue to make itself known in homes and businesses till the modern day. This piece of furniture, you’ll be unsurprised to learn, is known as the ottoman.
These plush footstools are an elegant callback to the favored furniture of the Ottoman Empire from which they get their name. The overall tufted design was a common feature of furniture of the era, and throughout the centuries they came to be the comfortable and versatile pieces we know today.
I knew that the ottoman I was looking for would have storage, be reasonably attractive, and be made of a material that would be durable and comfortable in equal measure. A tall order, I know. Those are some of the other considerations you’ll have to make when you’re looking for your own square storage ottoman.
Popular for indoor and outdoor patios, wicker seating is especially inviting when accompanied by a good rattan ottoman. It’s durable, light and easy to personalize. With a few brush strokes, you can turn a white rattan ottoman into a modern, customized pink, green or black wicker ottoman. Just keep your rattan furniture away from extreme heat and humidity and treat it with the occasional cleaning to ensure you enjoy it for years.

Something is enduring about the functional simplicity of the ottoman. A common piece of furniture since the rise of the Ottoman Empire and especially popular during the Victorian era, it’s appeared in multiple forms, sizes, and colors. One of the most popular innovations that have occurred over the extensive lifespan of the ottoman is that of internal storage.
