While the ottoman was once a centerpiece in any room, covering up to three-quarters of the available wall space in its original design, it’s humbler footstool design is no less respected or coveted in the modern age. Throughout history, multiple cultures have embraced this piece of furniture, and I was about to do some embracing of my own.
In 1299 there was an event that occurred that would change the way the world decorated its houses and living rooms for centuries to follow. The event would be the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, which would continue to exist in some form until 1922.
Most modern rectangle ottomans take a page from coffee tables and storage bench seats by combining storage, display potential and generous surface area. When space permits, a rectangular ottoman is all you need to round off a cozy nook or living room centerpiece. Consider moving your coffee table to a secondary seating area, making way for a modern, rectangular ottoman in your living room’s spotlight.
